The Flight Review Process
The Flight Review is the final practical step required by Transport Canada to obtain your Advanced Operations Certificate.
Prerequisite: You must first successfully pass the Transport Canada Small Advanced Operations written exam (80% minimum score) before booking the review.
Required Documentation: Prior to the review, candidates must provide the Flight Reviewer with:
Proof of the successfully completed Advanced Operations exam.
Valid government-issued photo identification.
The Certificate of Registration for the drone being used (250g to 25kg).
Practical Assessment: The review is an in-person, practical test where the pilot must demonstrate key proficiencies, including:
Completing thorough pre-flight checks and site surveys.
Performing controlled takeoffs, landings, and specific maneuvers (e.g., hovering, figure-eights).
Demonstrating the ability to execute emergency procedures (e.g., lost link, fly-away scenario).
Adhering to air law and pilot decision-making principles.
Certification: Upon successful completion, the results are submitted to Transport Canada within 24 hours, allowing the pilot to apply for their Advanced Operations certificate through the Drone Management Portal.
Benefits of Advanced Certification
Obtaining your Advanced Operations Certificate unlocks significant operational flexibility for professional drone use in Canada:
Controlled Airspace Access: Gain the regulatory permission to fly within controlled airspace (e.g., near airports or aerodromes) with proper coordination with Nav Canada.
Operations Near People: Legally fly an acceptable drone at distances of less than 30 metres from bystanders (or less than 5 metres for specific drones), opening up opportunities for commercial work in populous areas.
Professional Credibility: The certificate serves as a key differentiator, signifying adherence to the highest level of regulatory knowledge and practical skill set.
Maximum Operational Freedom: Allows the pilot to conduct both Basic and Advanced Operations, providing the widest range of legal commercial applications in the country.
